In this article we propose to analyze the history of photography retold literally in the novel O pintor de retratos, by Luiz Antonio de Assis Brasil. Through the trajectory of Sandro Lanari, a young portrait painter who tries to balance himself in the face to the modernity and the advent of photography, the author draws a historical and social portrait of the nineteenth century, recovering conflicts and artistic issues that succeeded the photographic invention, as the decline of portrait painters and the clash between painters and photographers. In this study, therefore, starting from the plot of the work, we will demonstrate how the history of photography and the literature relate, concluding that it is impossible to deal with this novel without encountering the theme and mechanisms that involve the photographic process. We will try to demonstrate that, despite the material absence of images, it is a photoliterary work, considering that photography plays a structuring role in the narrative.
