Abstract

This article investigates the film Nightbreed (1990), written and directed by Clive Barker, an adaptation of his novel Cabal (1988), understanding the film as an allegory about the social construction of abnormality, based on a literature review by Foucault on the subject. We think about the history of beings persecuted for their difference in two moments: first, the process of embodiment and subjectivation of that which is perceived as monstrous, as we see in Tucherman (2012), in the popular imagination and Preciado (2022), as a political figure: the strange. The second front to be addressed are the concepts of otherification, seen from Mbembe (2011) and Fanon (1968), and how such processes give rise to the organizations of queer crowds, as we saw in Preciado (2011). With this, we hope to show how Barker's work reveals a powerful horror marked by the element of difference.
