Abstract

This article examines the persistence and contemporary relevance of Franz Kafka’s work through an intermedial dialogue among literature and graphic novels. Taking The Metamorphosis (1915) and The Trial (1925) as its point of departure, the study investigates how the fragmentation of the subject, depersonalization, and the blurring of boundaries between the public and private spheres constitute central axes of Kafkaesque poetics. The article analyzes graphic adaptations by Peter Kuper (The Metamorphosis, 2003) and by David Zane Mairowitz and Chantal Montellier (The Trial, 2008), highlighting the expressive potential of images in expanding the meanings of the literary text. The article argues that these adaptations not only update Kafka’s work but also underscore its enduring power as a tool for understanding contemporary processes of alienation, identity erasure, and symbolic violence across different media and social contexts.
