Abstract

Volume 38.3 of Diacrítica brings together the thematic issue Divine – Masculine/Feminine/Other: engendering religious theories, practices, and expressions, which explores the intersections between gender and religion from multiple theoretical and methodological perspectives. The result of a plural and collective reflection initially sparked by the colloquium Gender and Religions (2022) and the subsequent conference series with the same title—both of which aimed to foster an interdisciplinary debate on the implications of gender in religious phenomena across various historical, cultural, and social contexts —, this volume presents case studies addressing different themes, chronologies, and geographies. In addition to summarising the contributions, this introduction provides a brief conceptual framework while offering a concise overview of the evolution of approaches to gender and religiosity, highlighting the impact of postmodern and feminist critical frameworks and the contribution of Ibero-American academic inputs to the topic. Furthermore, it underlines the dynamic and constantly (re)negotiated nature of gender and religion, seen as interlinked social constructs, and stresses the importance of intersectional approaches. In sum, this volume not only reflects previous academic debates, but also positions itself as an additional step in an ongoing dialogue, promoting plural perspectives that transcend traditional chronological, geographical, and theoretical boundaries.
