Abstract

More than two decades after the transfer of sovereignty from Portugal to the People's Republic of China, many questions remain about how to preserve the Macanese community in the Macao Special Administrative Region as a unique cultural identity. The case study presented in this paper aims to understand how young Macanese people fit into Macau society socially and culturally. This analysis is based on data obtained through a questionnaire survey. The results show a high degree of multilingualism, highlighting the continued role of the community as a link between the Chinese and Portuguese communities. The sense of belonging and pride of the Macanese community remains strong, sustained by habits and customs associated with gastronomy, Catholic religion and Portuguese language, constituting a fundamental pillar that helps to counteract the trend towards an increasingly fluid and hybrid identity, which tends to be diluted in the majority Chinese ethnicity. Despite the revitalisation efforts undertaken, the extinction of Patuá seems to be irreversible.
