Abstract

As part of the University of Madeira’s application for the recognition of Madeira Wine Traditions as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (UNESCO), a documentation project was carried out to record the technical-agricultural know-how of Madeiran vinegrowers during the summer of 2024. The qualitative research methodology consisted of collecting data through semi-structured interviews on viticultural activity, conducted with 24 informants who produce grapes for different Madeira wine companies, followed by their transcription and content analysis. The main objective was to collect, understand, and help preserve traditional viticultural knowledge and practices, along with their associated terminology, as a sociocultural and identity-bearing heritage. The linguistic, ethnographic, and terminological material gathered was systematised into six thematic categories: (1) grape varieties; (2) phases of the vine’s vegetative cycle; (3) vine diseases, pests, and treatments; (4) agricultural and cultural practices in viticulture; (5) tools and materials used in vine cultivation; and (6) organisations and entities linked to Madeira wine production. The findings highlight a predominance of terminology associated with traditional agricultural and cultural practices, revealing ancestral knowledge coexisting with some technical innovations. Results also show that new technical terms are more commonly known and used by younger and/or more formally educated informants, regardless of gender or geographical origin.
