The mother archetype in the fiction of Teresa Veiga: the case of “As Parcas”

The archetype of the mother, detected in various myths of not only Indo-European origin, is a constant in the literature of all times. The question of motherhood is also one of the matrices of Teresa Veigaʼs imagination, whose presence can be traced from her first collection of short stories to her last book. At the same time, it is important to note that this is not a fixed image in Veigaʼs work, but rather a constellation of images rich in variety and axiological nuances (e.g. topics of the absent / rival / alienated / suicidal / imaginary / protective mother, etc.). In this context, it is precisely the figure of the (hyper) protective mother, relevant in the short story “As Parcas” (Uma aventura secreta do marquês de Bradomín, 2008/2015), that is the focus of this analysis. At the centre of attention is the problematic relationship between mother and daughter, overshadowed by the symbolism of the Parcas. The analysis of this dual relationship is based on the archetypal structures developed by Carl Gustav Jung and aims to highlight the symbolic-mythological aspect of motherhood, as well as its phantasmatic subversion.
