Abstract

This article examines the cultural exchange between China and the Lusophone/Hispanophone worlds through a comprehensive analysis of translations of Latin American works published in the People’s Republic of China since 1949. While historical connections between these regions date back to the 16th century, a systematic study of their literary interactions has remained elusive due to scattered and inconsistent data. Drawing from a large dataset compiled through web scraping and the database from the Shanghai Library, we identify patterns in publication dates, countries of origin, and gender representation in translated works. Our analysis reveals both the potential and limitations of big data in mapping literary circulation, particularly where incomplete records and translation pathways complicate computational analysis. This project underscores the necessity of manual data refinement and proposes a critical approach that integrates feminist data critique with digital humanities methodologies.
