Abstract

Forest fires have increasingly become an issue of concern for the Brazilian territory's environmental management, primarily because they have been affecting Conservation Units. In this sense, research on this subject seeks not only to observe the dynamics of fire itself but also to understand how the intensity and magnitude of fires are affected by climatic conditions and the extent to which anthropogenic action has triggered this type of event, which is especially damaging to biodiversity. In this way, we are investigating forest fires of different intensities in the Pau Furado State Park (PEPF) and their relationship with the meteorological conditions at the time. PEPF is a vital Conservation Unit located in the Cerrado, near Uberlândia, Minas Gerais, Brazil, surrounded by private rural properties with intense management. For this study, we selected the following climatological variables: relative humidity, temperature, wind direction, and solar radiation. The climatological data were obtained from the meteorological station of Uberlândia for the period from 2018 to 2020, within the range of the dry months (May - September). The images were acquired using the Multispectral Instrument (MSI) sensor installed on the Sentinel-2 satellite. Our study, which involved mapping and classifying the intensity of the fires, revealed a strong correlation between “High Severity” fires and specific environmental conditions. These conditions are characterized by average temperatures above 30ºC and relative humidity below 40%. However, we argue that the key to preventing severe fires is not solely in understanding these climatological factors. It is in the comprehensive analysis of multiple factors, including but not limited to climatological ones. This is because a narrow focus on climatological variables alone does not provide a complete picture of the conditions that lead to the occurrence of more (or less) severe fires.
