Studies on Minoan society, in general, and on the Neopalatial period in particular, face a basic problem: the impossibility of understanding the few written records that have survived to the present. Consequently, many aspects of Minoan society can only be hypothesized, and the abundant iconographic corpus becomes the primary source for studying this culture. However, there is a traditional tendency to study images literally as if they were direct representations of reality. Furthermore, when it comes to interpreting the iconography per se, formal and comparative analyses are often used to find its possible meaning.
Given this, the following work proposes a new theoretical approach to the study of Minoan seals using an approach that combines Art History from a semiotic perspective and Symbolic Anthropology. The main objective is to gain a deeper understanding of the mechanisms of representation and the semiotic values that the images found on seals and sealings could have held within the context of the Neopalatial period. This approach may prove useful not only for this particular case study but also for examining the ways in which ancient cultures interacted socially through images.
