Non pictorial iconicity in comics

Visual information in comics is essentially iconic. It is expressed by figurative and non-figurative means. This article analyses non-figurative manifestations of iconicity in comics. In order to do this, it employs some concepts of Peirce’s semiotics, as much as Moles’ (2005) and Villafañe’s (1998) iconicity scales. The article presents some examples of non-pictorial iconicity found in contemporary comic books and concludes that innovative explorations in page layout, for instance, bring additional layers of meaning to the works, constituting visual metaphors and iconic signs with high stylistic value.
