Abstract

Illicit enrichment is a practice that can lead to profound social consequences, affecting public trust and exacerbating inequalities. When public officials and political officeholders accumulate wealth unjustifiably, it undermines not only administrative efficiency and transparency, but also the trust and credibility of democratic institutions. The resulting corruption creates a cycle of distrust and widespread injustice, worsening economic and social inequality. This article explores the sociodemographic origins of illicit enrichment, its impact on social cohesion and public perceptions of justice, and how it is addressed in various legal systems, while also considering the constitutional basis that seems to be overshadowed in discussions about its (much-desired) criminalization.
