Abstract

This paper aims to investigate the international positioning of contemporary Portuguese children’s literature by characterizing the publishing houses that have published foreign editions of Portuguese books in the last two decades. The research takes the form of a case-study, focusing on the catalogue of the prestigious publishing house Planeta Tangerina. The empirical analysis collects data related to the size of the foreign publishing houses, their association with circuits of large or small-scale production (Bourdieu 1993, 2008), the goals and mission officially shared by the publishing houses, and their catalogues. Considering the specificities of this literary subsystem, ascertaining the positioning of Portuguese children’s literature also implies investigating how it is perceived regarding the balance between the aesthetic, the didactic, and the ludic dimensions.
