Abstract

Autobiographical writing requires the writer to identify with the narrator and the main character fixed on paper. The person who represents himself/herself must identify with a linguistic otherness in order to reflect on himself/herself. This article seeks to demonstrate how the concept of prosopopoeia is pertinent to a better understanding of this self-reflexive phenomenon mediated by language. To substantiate the arguments, the article will analyse excerpts from the diaristic compilations I Had Nowhere to Go(1991) and I Seem to Live (2020), by Jonas Mekas. The aim is to investigate the different roles that prosopopoeia plays in Mekas’ diary entries and how it defines his self-representation.
